The Chimpanzee Lady, PETA, and the whole concept of having just a smidgen of horse sense

By now everyone has no doubt heard of the antics of Travis the Chimpanzee who bought himself a bullet at the hands of police officers for mauling 55 year old Charla Nash, a friend of the chimp’s owner Sandra Herold. If you haven’t then you obviously live in a cave and don’t come out too often and if that is the case what are you doing reading my inane prattling?

Predictably that most high-minded organization (the one I call People Eating Tasty Animals) had to jump in and decry the cruelty. Oh the horror, the horror. That poor chimp!! Oh that poor chimp was beaten and stabbed and pounded with a shovel and finally shot by a police officer. Hardly a mention in the article on the PETA website about Charla Nash despite the fact that she got half her face ripped off and suffered other extensive injuries. Nope not a mention. It was all about the animal.

Now if you dare to read their drivel you will see that they deplore the keeping of wild animals such as chimpanzees as pets. As far as that goes I’ll agree with them. Travis the Chimp did not belong in a home where he was treated like a mate practically. And a wild animal can’t be blamed when they act like a wild animal.

Let let me interject and say I absolutely love animals. I do not believe in mistreating them, but I also do not believe they have the same rights we enjoy as human beings, the pinnacle of God’s creation. God created animals for us to have dominion over. They serve us in various ways as beasts of burden and yes as food.  Now while the tree hugging, veggie burrito eating, Birkenstock wearing hippies get all upset over the notion of someone enjoying a good steak or a MickeyD’s burger, the plain and simple fact is that it was God’s intent for us to use animals in this way. I’m not making this up. Read the Bible if you don’t believe me.

Now back to Travis the Chimp. My mother, who is a wise woman, has been known to say on numerous occasions that people tend to get all worked up if somebody kills a dog or mistreats a puppy, but the same ones don’t make so much as a whimper when someone abuses a child. And she’s right. Just look at all the press the Michael Vick case got. I don’t condone what he did for a minute. It was sick and reprehensible and he got what he deserved, but at the end of the day it was a dog(s) not a human life.

You see in my way of thinking there is just something inherently wrong with believing an animal life has as much value as a human life. Animals were not created in the image of an almighty God to bear His image and reflect His glory. Man was created to bear the image of God. And when we elevate animals to the same status as humankind, we are in essence telling God He is wrong about His creation. Don’t know about you, but I am not one to want to disagree with a God who by the sound and power of His voice spoke the universe into existance.

And finally this Sandra Herold just sounds like a kook to me. What sort of person would have a 200 pound chimpanzee as a pet that they drink wine with, bathe with, and cuddle with in the bed. And that brings me to a final thought. Another one of my mother’s favorite sayings: “She don’t have the sense God gave a billy goat.”
